In their Champions League Group E match in Croatia against Dinamo Zagreb, Chelsea came up short.

 


Dinamo Zagreb defeated Chelsea 1-0 in their inaugural Champions League game of the year.

In the 13th minute, Mislav Orsic gave the Croatian team the lead by running through on goal and putting the ball past Kepa Arrizabalaga. The goal was unexpected given how much possession the Blues had in the early going.

However, they failed to capitalize on the pressure and quickly fell behind. Thomas Tuchel's team struggled to move the ball with accuracy the rest of the way, and some players held off on taking shots. On the opening day of the Champions League, Zagreb was able to hold on and achieve an unexpected victory, while Chelsea suffered their third loss of the year.

Pierre-Emerick Following his signing on Deadline Day, Aubameyang made his debut appearance for the team, with Kepa replacing Edouard Mendy in goal as the most significant alteration. It was a new look for Chelsea's front three, and they nearly scored early on, but Raheem Sterling's attempt was stopped by the Zagreb defense.

Later, the trio maintained their early fluidity and threat, but a teammate failed to connect with Kai Havertz's ball across goal. Although Tuchel's team had the majority of the possession, the hosts ultimately seized the lead. Wesley Fofana was beaten by Orsic after receiving a through pass, and he managed to slip the ball past Kepa in the Chelsea goal.
