Due to the ongoing faculty strike, Usman Abubakar-Rimi, a final-year medical and surgical student at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS), has started buying meals from a street seller.
According to Abubakar-Rimi, who spoke in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday, September 9, the project was born out of a desire to lead a productive life after the strike rendered students unemployed.
The student who runs a restaurant and noodle shop in the Diplomat neighborhood of Sokoto city claimed that the Academic Staff Union of Universities' (ASUU) continuing extended strike provided him with the perfect chance.
According on the customer's needs, a plate of food can cost as much as N200, according to Mr. Abubakar-Rimi.
He clarified that he also operates a store on Fodio road in the city of Sokoto where he offers men's and women's apparel, caps, student bags, and shoes.
"I always welcome the opportunity to hire workers, as I currently have 10 employees between my two shops. Despite the fact that schools were closed, I did not ask my parents for any money, so I relied heavily on the income from the stores.
According to Abubakar-Rimi, he did not use a loan or a youth empowerment program to start his enterprises.
However, Mr. Abubakar-Rimi continues, "during the pandemic I took advantage of the COVID-19 lockdown and started an egg and chicken distribution business where I had made contacts with restaurants for the supply. I also obtained the eggs and chickens from large scale farms from small amounts to higher quantity suppliers, from the proceeds I started the two businesses.
The businesses, he continued, had a lot of potential, and he urged young people to consider productive ways to spend their time and launch successful projects.
He continued by saying that the enterprises will continue and be integrated with the academic activities once the school resumed.
He claimed, "I created a sustainability plan where registers were opened for maximal record keeping, supply chain, and other management operations.
He claimed that using cell phones to enable contacts allowed them to run and manage their enterprises effectively thanks to the benefits of online platforms.
I intend to carry on with the projects even after I graduate thanks to the lucrative chances offered by the businesses.
In order to avoid losing hope in finding a job that pays a salary, Mr. Abubakar-Rimi stated, "When I become a Medical Doctor, I envisage to engage in work that will not be too time consuming. I want to establish a pharmacy, work in a private hospital, as well as engage in private initiated-businesses relevant to my profession."
He urged students to use their free time to start businesses, emphasizing how many chances were offered by the current online services.
The student urged President Muhammadu Buhari to prevent future strikes in the sake of youth and the development of the nation.
Additionally, he urged the professors to take into account the students' plights and find a solution through offers from the Federal Government as the impacts of strikes are beginning to hurt all facets of Nigerian society.
