Following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II at the age of 96, Prince Charles has taken the throne.
Following the passing of his mother, the eldest son of the Queen, age 73, has officially been proclaimed the new monarch of the United Kingdom.
The King's succession occurs immediately after Buckingham Palace revealed that his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, passed away on September 8 at the age of 96, in accordance with British law.
The tragic news of her departure was announced by the royal family in a statement, which stated, "The Queen died peacefully in Balmoral this afternoon." The King and the Queen Consort will spend this evening and tomorrow in Balmoral before flying back to London.
Because his mother had been the monarch for more than 70 years prior to his promotion, Charles had already established himself as the oldest and the longest-serving heir apparent in British history (he had held the title of Prince of Wales since July 1958).
Charles also gained the title of Duke of Edinburgh following the passing of his father, Prince Philip, in April 2021.
Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, Charles' wife, gains the title of "Queen Consort," which was given to her by the Queen in February 2022, as a result of the change in the throne.
In a statement issued on February 5, Queen Elizabeth II said, "When, in due course, my son Charles becomes King, I know you will offer him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me."
And it is my honest hope that Camilla will be referred to as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal devotion when that time comes. Charles and Camilla officially accepted the "honor" the next day, on the Platinum Jubilee, or 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth's Accession Day.
Prince William, age 40, who is Charles' eldest son, is now legitimately the next in line to the British throne as the country's new King.
