In a recent interview, the Speaker of the Ekiti Youth Parliament addressed misinformation surrounding the Ekiti State House of Assembly's (EKHA) trip to Canada. Speaking on behalf of the Youth Parliament, the Speaker clarified the purpose and funding of the journey while emphasizing the need for respect toward the legislative arm.
"The members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly are fully entitled to take trips, whether for rest or professional development. Legislators are human too, and they work tirelessly on behalf of the people. This break is an opportunity for them to recharge and gain new insights that will ultimately benefit our state," the Speaker explained.
Addressing allegations that state funds were used, the Speaker dismissed these claims as baseless. “The EKHA members funded this trip out of their own pockets,” he emphasized. "The idea that they used state funds is simply untrue. This has already been clarified by the EKHA’s media committee chairman on national television."
The Speaker highlighted the Assembly’s responsiveness to public concerns, including their swift response to the recent loss of an Ekiti student at LAUTECH, Oyo State. “This legislative body was one of the first to address this painful loss, showing their commitment to Ekiti’s people,” he noted.
Further commending the EKHA, the Speaker shared some of the Assembly’s recent advancements that make it one of the most progressive legislative bodies in Nigeria. “This Assembly has introduced an E-Parliament with electronic voting, live streaming of sessions, and a fully functional website. These initiatives are groundbreaking in terms of transparency and public engagement,” he said. “Additionally, they have mandated that all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) submit their budget performance reports quarterly, ensuring accountability and sound governance.”
He continued, “The EKHA also directed that all members must establish a constituency office within their respective constituencies. This strengthens their connection with the people they represent and enables more direct feedback on the issues facing various communities.”
The Speaker expressed disappointment at the criticism directed toward EKHA over the trip. "It’s disheartening to see the legislative arm subjected to such disrespect," he said. "These leaders are not only bringing positive change to Ekiti but are also personally investing in opportunities to improve their effectiveness."
In closing, the Speaker called on Ekiti citizens to rally behind EKHA’s efforts. "We at the Ekiti Youth Parliament encourage everyone to stand by our lawmakers, putting aside rumors and recognizing the real work they are doing. Let’s support their mission and rally around the leadership that’s committed to a brighter future for Ekiti State."
