At the age of 96, Queen Elizabeth II passed away.
In a statement, Buckingham Palace stated: "The Queen passed away peacefully this afternoon at Balmoral. The King and the Queen Consort will spend this evening and tomorrow in Balmoral before departing for London."
The announcement follows The Queen's historic Platinum Jubilee celebration in June of this year, which marked the 70th anniversary of her accession to the throne and made her the first monarch to do so.
Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward are the Queen's four surviving children. She also leaves behind eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
Following Boris Johnson's departure, Her Majesty met with Liz Truss, the new prime minister, and requested that she form a government. Due to The Queen's "mobility difficulty," Truss traveled to Balmoral Castle in Scotland, the royal residence in Aberdeenshire, for her meeting with Her Royal Highness.
Prince Charles, the heir apparent, will now succeed the deceased monarch as king.
During the Second World War, Queen Elizabeth II began engaging in public activities by speaking on the radio and being named one of her father's actual counselors of state.
She wed Philip Mountbatten in 1947, and the couple had four children together—Charles, Anne, Andrew, and Edward—before he passed away in 2021.
After her father, George VI, passed away too soon in 1952, she ascended to the throne and became the country's longest-reigning and -serving monarch.
In ten days, the nation will pause for two minutes of silence at a state burial at Westminster Abbey before the queen is laid to rest.
